Mask Optional in Schools, Buildings and CPS Transportation

March 7, 2022

At tonight's school board meeting, a resolution was passed to suspend the mask mandate in school buildings, district offices, and on yellow bus and van services. This update is effective immediately and is in line with the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Students, staff and visitors who want to continue wearing a mask are supported and encouraged to do so.

Updated Community Guidance

The district's updated mask policy is in line with CDC updates. When COVID-19 cases in the community are low or medium, mask-wearing will be voluntary for students, staff and visitors. When community cases are high, CPS will recommend the Board to require mask-wearing.

CDC mask guidance

Students and staff who test positive but are allowed to return to school after Day 5 must continue to wear a face mask for 10 days following a positive test per CDC guidelines. Updated information will be posted here on the district's website.

Students age five and under are not eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination. However, additional COVID-19 precautions are being taken in these spaces. All preschool classrooms, autism and multiple disabilities units now include air purifiers. Teachers and staff in these classrooms have been issued N-95 masks and can be worn voluntarily.
